CARRERA DE SAN RAFAEL RACE PROMOTER UPS THE ANTE WITH CASH AND PRIZES
TOP FINISHERS TO WIN A SPOT IN SAN FRANCISCO TWILIGHT CRITERIUM

San Rafael, Calif. (July 16, 2008) – Competitors who race well at the Carrera de San Rafael Twilight Criterium on Aug. 9, 2008 will win VIP registration to the San Francisco Twilight Criterium Series, a part of USA CRITS Championship series, to be held Sept. 13, 2008.

The top 10 Elite Category 3-4 Men and Elite 3 Women and top three Elite 1-2 teams at the Carrera de San Rafael will now be able to sign up for a position at the start line of the new invitation-only criterium race that will be set in one of the most scenic and popular neighborhoods of the City by the Bay.

“We are thrilled to have this opportunity to bring the Carrera’s best racers to San Francisco and the USA CRITS,” said Ryan Dawkins of Project Sport, LLC, organizer of both races. “This gives them the chance to showcase their talent before a crowd of upwards of 30,000 people, not to mention the international audience who watches online.”

For the Carrera de San Rafael, there is also a total cash purse of $5000 and great sponsor swag up for grabs, as well as “prime” laps that give great sprinters the opportunity to go home with something, even if they don’t finish on the podium.

Each race will be a high-speed chase through downtown San Rafael, on a one-kilometer course that includes a subtle incline from the start line through the first turn. A descent on the backside could change the composition of the field with every lap.

The slightly longer uphill straightaway in this year’s course could very well favor a breakaway situation, says Mack Chew, Team Captain of McGuire Cycling and Category 2 rider who has raced the Carrera twice before.

“Add to that the downtown location and the nighttime hour, and this becomes a really exciting Saturday night ‘event’ to race and to watch,” Chew said. “On the racer side, it is great to see a promoter put the spotlight on us, so to speak, and make us feel like rock stars, hanging out all day and then putting on our show that night.”

Registration is now open for Masters 35+ Men, and Elite and Pro Men and Women. Children ages three to 12 can also show off their competitive spirit during the free afternoon kids’ races.
