Hi NCNCA Racers and Promoters:

When I started getting involved in race promotions, I took over the reigns from Dave Walters, and pretty much copied what he was doing until I learned a few things. I realized the huge costs involved in putting on events, and that to have these events continue in the future, I had to make money to pay the bills. Unfortunatly, the women's and Jrs categories did not fill up, and put a financial burden on the entire event.

I got many, very nasty emails, calling me a male chauvinistic pig, because I didn't have enough women fields. Why did I not have separate cats for women like the men, where were their 45/55+ cats? etc. I was discriminating!! After responding to these women and letting them know that I too was a women, and that I understood their frustrations, I went ahead anyway, and against my better judgment and included a women's 45/55+ cat and picked 3/4 fields separately. But, in the long run, I did not get the Numbers to substantiate more women cat's. I had 10 racers for the 45/55+ women. I lost alot of money. I am sure most promoters agree, its not that we don't want to, its just that we can not afford it.

I did the registration for the First women's Crit for the Tour of California, and ladies, I am sorry, but we did not fill up at all. we needed about 35 more to fill up. Yes, it was refreshing to see such a large group of women in one race, and I was so glad to see that many show up, but guess what, it did not make any money. Laura was lucky enough to have AMGen foot the bills, if not, this would never have happened. Now if the TOC Women's race can not pay the bills, as they do not get enough women entries, how can you expect local race promoters to add more women cats? Its not financially sound.

I am bringing back the Two Rock Road Race, Sunday July 13, Casey has approved the race flyer, and I am sending in the $ this week, and you should see on the calendar soon. I struggled with the Women's Cats. We have to limit the # of fields on this road, in order to get permits from two different counties. Plus at this point, my budget to put on this event is over $20,000.00. In this economy right now, sponsorship money is lean. Putting in women's cat's will lower my income, it was a hard decision, and I am sure I am going to get complaints. I have the 3/4's racing together. Ladies, I just can not afford to give you more, and I am limited on time, per county permits. I wish I could give you more.

It all comes down to numbers, entry field numbers and $ numbers.

Ladies, you really do have the power to change this, by your actions. Stick together and show us promoters, by registering ( including pre reg) and showing up in droves, that you want to race, and you want more choices in Cat's. Give us a reason to add more women's fields and we will. I will gladly take away a men's field (quiet guys,) if you can make it worth my while and show me that there is a market for this field. You will never be able to match the # of men racers, and promoters need to keep this in mind, but when I get 15 in a race, it tells me their is no market for a women's field.

Prove us wrong ladies, unite, show up and race!! ( same goes for you too Juniors!)
