“Golden Gate Park sees return of Andy Jacques-Maynes”

The California Giant Berry team had great reasons to celebrate at the opening round of the Bay Area Super Prestige Cyclocross series in October. Andy Jacques-Maynes and Justin Robinson pulled off a 1-2 finish over Northern California arch rivals from HRS-Rocklobster but later in the afternoon all of the celebrations developed a bitter taste. Andy re-injured his just healed collarbone in a fall later that day while running on the circuit. During the Memorial Day criterium in May Jacques-Maynes clobbered a lightpole in the final turn of the final lap of the race in Morgan Hill and was airlifted from the site.  After a summer-long recuperation he was back on the bike preparing for the full ‘cross season when his fall and winter plans had to be modified again to face more surgery and more healing. But the wait is over – Andy has received Doctor’s permission to blast off again and will join Series Leader and Teammate Justin Robinson at Sunday’s start line in Golden Gate Park.

Robinson has taken 2 victories since becoming the solo team leader and held off a steady campaign by HRS/Rocklobsters with a 14 point lead over David Wyandt heading for Sunday’s 60 minutes in the Golden Gate Park Red Zone. The Polo Fields circuit, slightly modified from the 2005 stop on the US Grand Prix tour, expects to welcome some 500 participants to its sand-based trails. With just a short sand pit and a double barricade section, the majority of the course is wide open and leading to the heavily rooted Northwave climb that has been a featured detail for the rowdy crowds lining both sides of the course.

Only 2 points separate the top 4 contenders in the Women’s Elite category with Sarah Maile the
3rd rider so far to earn the leader’s jersey. Sarah Kerlin has taken 2 wins so far but missed Round 2 when she was racing for the US team at the World Cup and that has opened the door for a host of NorCal contenders.
