The Fremont course is less than a mile from my house, BUT, I thought I'd share some ideas:

- try Bart. The Fremont Bart station is less than one mile from the course. Exit the station to the south and continue south to Walnut Ave. Head west and you will run into the course!

- if you take Bart or do not want to jump on your rollers you could warm-up on the old (1992) Fremont course. It's kitty-corner tothe current course (southeast). Roll south to Walnut Ave, turn right on Paseo Padre Parkway, right on Kerney, right on Liberty (~.7 mile) and do as many loops as you like. If you do not want to stop at the stop sign you can make the loop bigger and continue south on Paseo Padre Parkway to Stevenson Blvd, then right on Liberty (~1 mile)

- for your cool-down you can head over to Lake Elizabeth and spin on the bike trail (Lake Elizabeth is southeast of Paseo Padre Parkway and Stevenson Blvd.)

- lastly, there's food all around the course. Here's some of my favorites (all within 1 mile of the course):
Jamba Juice, StarBuck's, Noah's- southeast corner of Fremont Blvd. and Mowry Ave.
Chili's, Elephant Bar, Safeway- southwest corner of Fremont Blvd and Mowry Ave.
Chipotle, Los Tres Hombres, Peet's, Burger King, Wells Fargo, Raley's- southeast corner of Mowry and Paseo Padre Parkway (go to the top of the course- Capitol- and head east)

Oh, and the best bike shop in Fremont is the Bicycle Garage at 4673 Thorton Ave. just off 880. 510-795-9622

And for those that care about cycling history: it's interesting to know that shortly after the 1992 Fremont Crit the USCF changed the rulebook to include wording about differentiating cash and non-cash prizes. The 1992 race offered $17,000 in cash and prizes for the 1/2/Pro race. Coors Light and the USA National Team were attracted to the race but were disappointed when the cash payout was only $1,700 and the prizes were $15,300. I think good came out of this rule change which is why I'm sharing this bit of history.

See you on Saturday, Larry Nolan, AMD-Discovery Channel
