If you thought the Tour of California was a great place to see world class cyclists up close then Friday and Saturday’s track racing should be on your social calendar.

3rd place ToC prologue finisher Ben Jacques-Maynes is ready to compete. Taking a break from his NRC racing (and #1 ranking!), the American Velodrome Challenge in San Jose just happens to fit into his race schedule. Personally, I love that roadies like Ben, Michael Hernandez, Steve Reaney, Jeff Poulson, Mark Patten, Dan Martin and a host of others have decided to come out to the newly improved San Jose venue.

Way back at the Early Birds in January and every chance we get the coaches and mentors encourage new racers to try the many racing disciplines available to us. Technical criteriums, hilly road races, time trials, cyclo cross or mountain biking may fill your competitive spirit… but, if you haven’t tried track racing you may be missing out on one of the best parts of our sport. I encourage you to come on out to the track this weekend to see for yourself how much fun (and competitive) we’re having.

Friday 6-10:30pm and Saturday noon to 9:30pm. Hellyer Park Velodrome- 101 south (4 miles south of 101/ 680/ 280) to Hellyer Exit, right turn and straight into the park. $6 for parking. Hope to see some of you out there. Larry Nolan, AMD-Discovery Channel Junior and Masters cycling team

PS- after you’ve witnessed track racing for yourself you’ll be happy to know that “new rider” sessions are held every Saturday morning, all-year long (except for rain). Three of these sessions and you can then race Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays or events like this! I promote the Thursday night points race series that will run August 2, 9, 16, 23 and September 6, 13, 20 and 27th this year. Come on out and race!
