The track lighting was not the only wiring hit Monday night. The park lost some power lines as well. The restrooms don't have battery backup on their auto-flush systems so have been locked. Port-a-potties are now in place, much as they were when the restrooms were upgraded. The chief ranger assures me that the existing cut wires have been made safe for our daytime use of the track.
Current discussions at the county involve future security of the new wiring, in view of the current and expected future of copper prices.
To clarify, the current lights and their wiring belong to the county and always have. The entire velodrome belongs to the county who represents its actual owners, the public. The light standards we use now came from one county project where they were surplus to the velodrome at Hellyer where they were needed. They were never donated.
Most repairs and upgrades at the track that involve public safety are the responibility of the county. We can only perform work that is either maintenance, like line repainting, or that has been approved by the county engineer to be accomplished by our donated labor. We have been given a lot of leeway in that approval in the past, possibly considering that we do have many kinds of expertise in our ridership.
However, repairing/upgrading the wiring is not ours to do. The county will come up with the plan and implement it.

Gary -
We did discuss that very thing. Don't know if the county would be willing to do that. Expense wise, the cost would go way up - not so much in materials, but in labor.
I don't have the details, but there was some kind of deal worked out when the lights were originally put in. The lights themselves were donated, but the wiring, etc belongs to the county. More details - Mike? Peter? John? Casey?

To anyone with nothing else to do now on Wed/Fri nights-
When (if?) the wiring gets replaced, I'd give even money someone tries again to steal the wires if they are put back in their original configuration.
Is there any reason they can't be routed underground or inside conduit?
Just wondering,
Gary
