[NCNCA] Stationary trainers recommended? at Davis?

Interesting item on the Davis Criterium announcement:

   Note: Stationary trainers are highly recommended

Anyone know why?  I've always found the roads around Davis to be an
excellent place to warm up, particularly west to Putah Creek and Mace.
Trainers are also known to complicate hydration, a key element in this
particular race.  Is it thorn season perhaps?
