That's more or less what we had in the 70s and 80s with the Prestige
Road Trophy.  Perhaps someone who was around when that points
competition was discontinued can tell us why it was changed.

Personally I'd like to see multiple points series competitions, one like
we have now which isn't really a BAR but more of an MAR (most
all-around) and another which awards more points to competitive races.
Could also have a BAC (best climber), BAS (sprinter), ...  Once
weightings/rankings are defined it's just as easy to calculate multiple
competitions as a single BAR/BAT (per category/etc).
